Metal Stamping Basics

The Punch Press
Another word for this basic metal press technique is perforation. It requires heavy tons of sudden and intense force to punch a design onto a sheet of metal. Most important to watch out when punch pressing is emerging with a part that is misaligned.
The Simple Die
This is also a perforation method but works only on basic forms. The simple die is a machine that works on single runs only. In other words, the operator will have to keep realigning the part being perforated if it needs more than one hole. He will have to remove the part and reload it, making sure to position at the exact angle necessary to achieve accuracy.
The Compound Die
In contrast, the compound die has a feeder and needs only one station. The part if is perforated must be removed manually but the machine can run continuously provided someone is around to remove the excess metal parts in time. Obviously this machine is more advanced than the simple die and uses less space. It is also more inclined to be accurate.
The Progressive Die
This is by far the best way to handle metal press and stamp because there is minimal manual labor required. It’s like a production line with stations and the part goes through each station with the early station handling the perforations. The part starts as raw material and ends up as a finished product. Most metal press companies of experience use this technology to achieve precision and excellence in their outputs.
